2013
I deeply enjoyed this when it was released, but it’s a real shame that it was Daft Punk’s last album. It can be kind of hard for me to listen to these days because it semi-ironically brings back some difficult memories, and also serves as a reminder of Daft Punk’s retirement.
When Daft Punk announced their retirement in “Epilogue” they played “Touch”, an absolutely beautiful song. In this song the phrase “if love is the answer, you’re home” is repeated – a phrase can also be found on Paul & Linda McCartney’s album “RAM” from 1971. Oddly enough, both albums were released on May 17th. “Touch” is simply a masterpiece. Every time I listen to it I always have to follow it up with what came next on the album – “Get Lucky”.
“Get Lucky” was the big hit from this album and I’m still not tired of it 8 years later.
“Contact” is an incredible finale to the album. The distortion effects towards the end are intricately done, reminiscent of a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo, and very enjoyable to focus on and follow. Knowing that every little detail was done intentionally is an emotionally impressive testament to Daft Punk’s musical and creative proficiency.
